Work title: Dietitian II

What is your current role, and what area of nutrition or dietetics do you work in?

I am a clinical dietitian at the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown, and I work in the inpatient general medicine and surgical units.

What drew you to this area of practice?

I enjoy the fast-paced setting of inpatient care, the array of cases I see in general medicine, and prescribing parenteral nutrition support for people with bowel complications on the surgical unit.

How did the University of Iowa Master of Clinical Nutrition program prepare you for your work as a registered dietitian?

I was able to get a lot of hands-on practice in a real hospital setting throughout the program, so I was confident by the time I started working as a registered dietitian. In classes, it was great to learn examples of real-world applications from adjunct professors who were practicing dietitians at the hospital.

What aspects of the program were most valuable in preparing you for your current role?

The clinical concentration was most valuable. I studied various disease states and their pertinent biochemical data, medications, and medical nutrition therapy; and I apply this knowledge daily at my current job.

What has been the most rewarding part of your career since graduating from the program?

Making a difference for somebody’s health, no matter how big or how small. Also, utilizing my field of expertise to collaborate with other disciplines within the healthcare team to achieve the best outcome for each patient.

What advice would you give to prospective students considering the Master of Clinical Nutrition program?

If you’re aiming to be a registered dietitian, this is the perfect program, especially if you want to specialize in clinical nutrition. You will earn your Master’s degree and complete supervised practice all within two years, yet since it is a small class, you will receive close attention and guidance from the faculty and supervisors to facilitate your learning.
